The Old Theater: A Space for Creation and Cultural Resistance

by PREMIUM.CAT

A Unique Space in the Cultural Panorama

The Antic Teatre has established itself as a reference in Barcelona, combining elements of community gathering, social protest and contemporary art. In a recent call with the motto ‘2025: Ensuring the permanence of the Antic project’, attendees reflected on the future of this space, remembering Ada Colau’s promise to take over the building two years ago.

The Importance of the Artistic Community

Semolina Tomic, an icon of contemporary culture, opened the session with an emotional thank you to all those present, from artists to journalists, underlining the importance of their collaboration. The Antic Teatre celebrates its 22nd anniversary this year, a moment that highlights not only its survival, but also its mission to promote the living arts.

An Uncertain Future but Full of Opportunities

Tomic emphasized the need for a robust cultural circuit in Catalonia, a space where contemporary arts can flourish. ‘Where are the municipal theaters and civic centers?’ he asked, urging authorities to reflect on their role in local culture.

The Challenge of Innovation and Diversity

L’Antic Teatre defines itself as a laboratory for new forms of artistic expression. According to Clàudia Vallès, head of production, ‘we are dedicated to producing and exhibiting innovative scenic languages’. This implies a commitment to emerging creation, which encompasses a wide range of disciplines, including contemporary circus and cabaret.

A New Era of Creation

With Víctor Guerrero taking the helm of the project, an exciting renovation is expected. Guerrero, known for his work with El desplume, will bring a new vision to the Old Town, with the intention of fusing the performing arts with the local community.

Programming in Constant Evolution

The new head of communications, María Jurado, has expressed her desire for provocative art that challenges the public. Her proposals include ‘Romantic Dances’, an immersive work that revisits the classics with a contemporary approach. In addition, the Antic is preparing to host circus and innovative dance shows, among which ‘Masha’ and ‘Cruuu’ stand out.

A Commitment to the Community

One of the distinctive features of the Antic Teatre is its inclusion of residents in its events. Open rehearsals and performances are an occasion for interaction and dialogue, creating a link between art and community.

Looking Towards the Future

With a dynamic programming and a firm commitment to innovation, the Antic Teatre is preparing to face the challenges of 2025. Its capacity to adapt and evolve is a testament to its value within the cultural landscape of Barcelona. The invitation is clear: continue to attend this vital space for the arts, because its existence depends on the active participation of the community.
