The lawyer and his message

Gonzalo Boye, Carles Puigdemont’s lawyer, has found in irony and insinuations a distinctive style to communicate with his followers. With more than 245,000 followers on the X platform (formerly Twitter), Boye has used this space to comment on recent events, such as the president’s flight into exile during the inauguration of Salvador Illa. In one of his latest tweets, he reflected on the nature of acts of civil disobedience, noting that they are often incomprehensible at first, but can eventually bear fruit.

Puigdemont’s symbolic return

Last Thursday, Puigdemont made a public appearance in Barcelona after years of exile in Belgium, reaffirming his commitment to the pro-independence cause. In an emotional speech at the Arc de Triomphe, he declared: ‘We are here because we have no right to resign.’ However, shortly after the event, he mysteriously disappeared, managing to avoid a Mossos d’Esquadra operation aimed at arresting him.

Criticism of the police operation

The reactions were not long in coming. Joan Ignasi Elena, former interior minister, accused Junts and Puigdemont’s entourage of trying to undermine Salvador Illa’s investiture. Elena affirmed that the Mossos device was not prepared for the unexpected maneuver of the president in exile and rejected the criticism of the police operative, considering them as an attack on the legitimacy of the current Government.

Complaints and political strategies

In a similar tone, Jordi Turull, general secretary of Junts, expressed his disagreement with the police deployment, describing it as ‘regrettable’ and regretting that politics has reached these extremes. His position coincides with that of Boye, who has argued that acts of civil disobedience are often misinterpreted and ridiculed before being recognized as significant.

An uncertain future

With the shadow of civil disobedience and political tensions surrounding Puigdemont and his entourage, the future of independence leadership in Catalonia is uncertain. The actions and reactions of the authorities and politicians will continue to generate debate and division, while the figure of Puigdemont remains central to this complex political narrative.
