Unwanted loneliness: A reality transformed by the Vincles al Pirineu program

by PREMIUM.CAT

A worrying reality

In the corners of the Alt Pyrenees and Aran, unwanted loneliness emerges as a disturbing reality, capturing the attention of 80% of residents. This concern comes from a survey carried out by the Vincles program on 670 people who live in the counties of Pallars, Alta Ribagorça, Alt Urgell and Cerdanya.

Integrating technology and community

To address this situation, the Links program proposes an innovative strategy that combines data analysis technology with community mobilization. This combination aims to identify areas and populations with a high risk of unwanted loneliness in order to intervene appropriately.

This initiative comes to Catalonia after a decade of experience in the Basque Country. Its implementation has already begun in municipalities such as Les, Montferrer and Castellbó, Bellver de Cerdanya, Sort, Pobla de Segur and Vall de Boí.

A focus on the Pyrenees

The Alt Pyrenees and Aran stands out for being one of the regions with a high concentration of aging population and with a significant proportion of households with only one person. Of the 31,202 households that make up the Pyrenees, 10,759 are single-person households.

Toni Codina, director of the iSocial Foundation, highlights the importance of early detection of situations of vulnerability. This detection will be carried out with the collaboration of regional social services, local entities and through the application of new technologies and community initiatives.

Development and implementation

The Vincles project, known as Next Generation, has already started in six municipalities in collaboration with the Social Services of Alt Pirineu and Aran. It is expected that in the coming years it will spread to the rest of the territory, covering the entirety of the six counties in 2025.

In addition to the technological aspects, the program involves community activation. The volunteers will coordinate local initiatives and maintain regular accompaniment with the beneficiaries of the program, creating personal links of support.

Promotion of the quality of life

The final objective of Vincles is to improve the management of information in social services, detect risk situations early, strengthen community ties and provide peace of mind to family members. In addition, it seeks to promote people’s autonomy and quality of life, delaying the negative effects that loneliness can have on health and well-being.
