Urgent Urban Improvements in Igualada: Ignored Neighbors

by PREMIUM.CAT

An Obsolete Reality in Molí Nou

Since the approval of the General Urban Plan of Igualada in 1986, a small area known as Molí Nou has been forgotten by time. Located between the Fátima neighborhood and Avinguda Àngel Guimerà, this area has an appearance reminiscent of decades past: unpaved streets, poor lighting and the absence of essential services such as sewage. Currently, around 30 residents live in this unknown corner of the city, with a single access road.

Denunciation of the Political Formation

The political group Igualada Som-hi has decided to make its voice heard, demanding that the local government allocate part of the funds it will receive from the Generalitat to improve the infrastructure of Molí Nou. In particular, they are asking that priority be given to asphalting works on the streets, including Neptú Street, which connects to other key areas of the city.

An Obsolete Plan That Needs Updating

The current General Urban Plan includes key 20b, which specifies the need to remodel the area due to its obsolescence and flood-prone nature. However, this plan has never been implemented, leaving the community in a precarious situation. Jordi Cuadras, leader of the opposition, has stressed the importance of resolving this situation, stating that it is not possible to allow streets without basic conditions in the 21st century.

A Funded Opportunity

With the arrival of 780,000 euros from the PUOSC, the socialists see a unique opportunity to address the needs of neighborhoods with infrastructural deficiencies. This amount is considerably higher than the previous allocation, and the municipal group considers it essential to allocate it to improving the conditions of streets that currently do not have asphalt or sewerage.

Criticism of the Government’s Priorities

Cuadras has expressed his frustration with recent government decisions, noting that a stretch of a street where there are no residents has been paved, while other areas such as Torrent de l’Espelt and Neptú remain neglected. This, he says, reflects a lack of sensitivity on the part of the executive that has lasted for more than a decade.

The Need for Urban Planning Reviews

Architect Salvador Pelfort has highlighted the urgent need to review the POUM of Igualada, which has not been updated for almost 40 years. According to him, it is crucial that the streets that are currently inefficient are transformed into adequate urban spaces and provided with the necessary services to guarantee an acceptable quality of life for their inhabitants.
