Exploring Medieval Heritage: Catalan Castles through Escudero

by PREMIUM.CAT

A Journey Through History

The history of castles in Catalonia is fascinating and rich, and as an art historian, I have witnessed the evolution of this subject over the years. The publications that analyze the presence of these fortifications, from the early research of Lluís Almerich to contemporary works, have been an invaluable source of inspiration and knowledge for those who wish to explore the architectural heritage of our land.

The Revelation of a Digital Jewel

A little over a year ago, I discovered an exceptional platform created by historian Antoni Escudero i Costa, who has been described as a true troubadour of castles. This website, www.elscastellscatalans.cat, is a treasure trove of information and photographs that capture the essence of these historic buildings, offering an invitation to discover the most hidden corners of the Catalan territory.

An Exhibition That Illuminates the Past

With the exhibition currently being held at the Espai Òmnium Anoia, which presents a selection of photographs of the first 1300 castles documented on the web, the opportunity to connect with our cultural heritage becomes more accessible. From January 20 to February 14, visitors can enjoy an exhibition that highlights the diversity and historical richness of these monuments, which have withstood the test of time.

An Essential Collection

The website was created on March 8, 2023 and currently has 2557 references, ranging from ruined castles to those that have been carefully restored. Each image and description offers a window into significant moments in Catalan history, inviting all those interested to deepen their knowledge of our heritage.

The Commitment of a Passionate Person

Antoni Escudero, an active member of Òmnium and a passionate about cultural heritage, has dedicated his life to researching and documenting castells. Since the late 1980s, he has traveled the Catalan lands incessantly, accumulating knowledge and experiences that have enriched his work. With his commitment, he has visited 2601 fortifications and buildings, each with its own history and charm.

A Heritage That Unites Us

The architectural diversity of the castles, with 83 of them located in our region alone, is a reflection of the cultural legacy we have inherited. Escudero has turned his passion into a mission, and now, with his bike and on foot, he continues to explore and share the beauty of these monuments.

A Future Full of Discoveries

Escudero’s dedication not only preserves the history of castles, but also inspires future generations to discover and value architectural heritage. His work, rich in passion and knowledge, is a gift to all those who seek to better understand the roots of our collective past, a journey that invites us to explore the wonders of our land.
