A Long Awaited Announcement
Finally, Pedro Almodóvar has revealed the mystery. It has been publicly announced who will be the two international actresses who will star in his new film, entitled ‘The room next door’, as he confirmed in his last text published in elDiario.es. The chosen ones are Julianne Moore and Tilda Swinton, who will give life to the two main characters in their first feature film in English after the failure of ‘Manual for cleaning women’ and the two short films shot in recent years, ‘The human voice’ and ‘Strange way of life’.
The Protagonists and the Misunderstanding
Swinton had already hinted in recent months that she would be in this new film by Almodovar, but it was unknown who would be her partner in this film whose male protagonist’s name has also been revealed. It will be John Turturro, regular in the films of the Coen brothers. In the statement published by its production company, El Deseo, the first synopsis of what the director defines as ‘the story of a very imperfect mother and a resentful daughter separated by a big slip’ is also given.
Details of the Plot
The mother played by Swinton will be a war reporter, a role that already belonged to her in ‘The Human Voice’. On the other hand, Julianne Moore will play a writer of autofiction, friend of the mother and ‘guardian of the pain and bitterness of both’. Almodóvar, in the first tracks of his new film, writes: ‘The film talks about the limitless cruelty of wars, about the very different ways in which the two writers approach and write about reality, it talks about death , of friendship and sexual pleasure as the best allies to fight against horror’.
Filming and Expectations
‘The room next door’ will begin shooting in March between Madrid and New York, with Moore and Swinton doing script readings and first rehearsals in Spain, a key part of the process for the director. Now it remains to be seen who will star in the rest of the roles in this film produced, as always, by El Deseo, and which also has the participation of Movistar+.
Other Featured Films of 2025
This will be one of many major shoots taking place in 2024, promising a 2025 crop where several big names will debut their new works. Carla Simón, Sorogoyen, Albert Serra or Oliver Laxe (also produced by El Deseo) are some of the filmmakers preparing films with a view to the next year.
