A controversial exclusion

Last Wednesday, during the confrontation between Mallorca and Girona in the Copa del Rey, the club’s fans became aware of a worrying situation: the Catalan’s absence from the scoreboards in the new stadium. This fact generated great controversy and complaints from followers.

One of them was Joan Andreu, a member of Mallorca, who expressed his sadness on social networks at seeing how the Catalan language had disappeared from the Son Moix monitors. This modern sports facility was recently inaugurated after an extensive remodeling. Joan shared an image of a video scoreboard where it read ‘corner kicks’ in Spanish and suggested labeling it again in Catalan.

Various reactions

Opinions on this incident were varied. Some users, such as Tolo Sent, mentioned that the club had already fulfilled traditional aspects of Mallorcan culture, such as ‘ball de bot’, a folkloric festival. However, Joan Andreu responded that the labeling had always been in Catalan and that the change occurred with the markers and the new graphics.

The debate continued on social media, where other users questioned whether this was the first time it had happened. Joan Andreu reaffirmed that since the introduction of the new markers, Catalan had been excluded. Faced with this situation, a user suggested he file a formal complaint, and he did so.

The letter to Mallorca

Joan Andreu decided to write a letter addressed to the president of Mallorca, Andy Kholberg, expressing his complaint and requesting the Catalan’s return to the Son Moix scoreboards. In the letter, Joan highlighted that, although there are partners who speak other languages, Catalan is a historical heritage of Mallorca that must be preserved. He also called for collective involvement to keep this language alive.

Joan Andreu’s letter generated an impact on social networks, receiving support from various users and organizations such as the Platform for Language, who asked RCD Mallorca that the graphic image of the video markers be consistent with the work carried out in other aspects related to the culture and language.

In short, the exclusion of the Catalan from the scoreboards of Mallorca’s new stadium has generated an intense debate and multiple requests for this situation to be reconsidered. Joan Andreu’s letter seeks to draw the attention of the club president and promote reflection on the importance of linguistic inclusion in an environment that represents the entire Mallorcan community.
