The circular economy and its institutional support
The circular economy is a widely accepted concept with intense institutional support. In Spain, there are several initiatives and strategies related to the circular economy, such as the Spanish Circular Economy Strategy, the Circular Spain 2030 plan and the Circular Economy Action Plan. In addition, there are different organizations and pressure groups dedicated to promoting the circular economy, such as the Circular Economy Foundation and Circular Economy in Action. This institutional support demonstrates the importance and the need to move towards a more sustainable and circular model.
The challenges of the circular economy in Spain
Despite this institutional support, the circular economy in Spain faces several challenges. According to a study by the BBVA Foundation and the Valencian Institute of Economic Research (Ivie), Spain has managed to reduce the generation of urban waste per capita and has a modest rate of circular use of materials. However, recycling rates are still low and the rate of circular use of materials has decreased in recent years. In addition, there are controversies about the management of household packaging and the amount of waste that ends up in landfills. The need for eco-design and innovation to get the most out of recycled materials is also highlighted.
The importance of innovation in the circular economy
To overcome the challenges of the circular economy, it is crucial to foster innovation. Currently, there is a lack of innovation in the processes of recycling and recovery of materials, and this limits the potential of the circular economy. It is necessary to develop innovative models and processes to make the most of recycled materials and extract the wealth they contain. In addition, research and eco-innovation must be promoted to improve the sustainability and efficiency of processes related to the circular economy. This is an opportunity for Spain to increase its competitiveness and contribute to the transition towards a more sustainable and circular economy.
