The Need for Vaccination among the Vulnerable Population

The Department of Health has issued an urgent warning about vaccination against influenza and COVID-19, especially targeting people over 60 and those with health conditions that make them more susceptible to these diseases. The intention is to strengthen this group’s defenses against viruses that affect the respiratory tract.

Current Data and Growing Contagions

With the arrival of the peak of flu infections, statistics for the first week of January 2025 have shown a worrying doubling of the incidence rate, which has reached 72.86 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. This figure coincides with the trends observed at a European level, underlining the seriousness of the situation.

Vaccination Advancement and Opportunities

Since the start of the vaccination campaign at the end of October, nearly 6,700 flu vaccines and almost 1,700 doses against COVID-19 have been administered. Health authorities consider these figures as positive, and recall that the possibility of getting vaccinated will continue to be available until January 31. Those who have not yet done so are encouraged to make an appointment at health centers.

Preventive Measures during Winter

In addition to vaccination, the Ministry of Health insists on the importance of following prevention measures during the period of maximum circulation of respiratory viruses, which extends from October to May. These measures include rigorous hand hygiene, regular ventilation of indoor spaces, and avoiding crowds, especially for the most vulnerable people.

Tips for Effective Prevention

Among the highlighted recommendations are: covering your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing, using masks if respiratory symptoms occur, and maintaining the use of masks in enclosed spaces, especially for those who care for vulnerable people or work in healthcare settings.

A Collective Commitment

Public health is a shared responsibility. Vaccination and the implementation of preventive measures not only protect individuals, but also help preserve the health of the community at large. Collaboration and awareness of the importance of these actions are key to addressing the threats posed by respiratory viruses during the winter.
