The Catalan Nurses union and the Department of Health reach an agreement

After several hours of meetings and negotiations, the Catalan Nurses union and the Department of Health have finally reached an agreement that has allowed the indefinite strike that had been called by the union on December 12 to be called off.

This agreement includes organizational improvements in the sector, although the workers have given up the salary supplement they were claiming, of between 400 and 600 euros per month. In return, a commitment has been reached by the Government to prioritize professional requalification in Madrid, recognizing nurses as shift leaders and on-call. The right to digital disconnection has also been guaranteed with the creation of a specific code during 2024.

Commitments to improve the working situation of nurses

In addition to organizational improvements and the recognition of specific positions, it has been agreed to study the real needs of the vehicle fleet in the territory in order to guarantee better home care. A firm commitment has also been achieved in the recognition of nursing specialties and the creation of a job board with specific positions.

A first step towards improving professional conditions

The Infermeres de Catalunya union, which has no representation at the sectoral table, has highlighted that despite not having achieved all the demands, this agreement is an important first step towards improving the professional conditions of nurses. However, they have made it clear that they will be vigilant and will not hesitate to call a strike again if necessary.

This strike had been called as a protest for the third agreement of the Catalan Health Institute agreed between the Department of Health and other unions in the sector. The main claims of the nurses were the professional and economic recognition of the A1 category, as well as the recognition of specialties and improved working conditions.

Despite this agreement, the nurses continue to claim a formal reclassification of their category, which depends on the Ministry of Health. As long as this reclassification does not occur, the union is asking for a salary supplement to the budgets that will reward the approval at the A1 level.
