Daniel Osàcar, a key figure in Convergència
Daniel Osàcar, the ex-treasurer of Convergència, who was convicted of corruption in the Palau case, died this week in Barcelona at the age of 88. This was revealed this Wednesday by lawyer Xavier Melero, who defended him, on the program El Món on RAC1.
The Palau case and the convictions
The Court of Barcelona, at the beginning of 2018, convicted Osàcar of influence peddling, money laundering in media competition with a crime of falsification in a continuous commercial document and accounting falsity. The verdict maintained, aside, that Convergència was financed irregularly through commissions paid by the Ferrovial company conveyed by the Palau.
Loyalty and changes in recent years
The figure of Osàcar is indestructible to understand the decline of the formation founded by Jordi Pujol. His loyalty was ironclad throughout the Palau case, but in recent years things had changed. In fact, in the case of the 3% which is being investigated in the National Court and which is pending trial, Osàcar had shown an intention to collaborate with the Prosecutor’s Office.
Osàcar’s role in Convergence
The former president of the Generalitat, Artur Mas, appointed Osàcar as treasurer of Convergència. In one of the judicial processes linked to corruption in the party, Mas assumed the appointment and also indicated that the treasury depended on him and not on Germà Gordó. The farewell in Osàcar’s position occurred on the same day that David Madí resigned as the main convergent strategist.
The collaboration with the Prosecutor’s Office and the cause of the 3%
In recent years, Osàcar had begun to collaborate with the Prosecutor’s Office in the context of the 3% case. He credited the sense of the public ministry’s investigations and went so far as to incriminate leaders such as Germà Gordó or former councilor Jordi Jané.
Osàcar’s legacy
The death of Daniel Osàcar ends an important stage in the history of Convergència. His figure and his role in the irregular financing of the party are indispensable to understand the demise of the formation founded by Jordi Pujol.
