The tradition of Easter bunnies
Easter Monday is approaching and the windows of Sant Feliu pastry shops are starting to fill up with Easter sweets. According to tradition, the godfather gives the godchild a cake made from a sweet brioche, originally without chocolate, topped with hard-boiled eggs. However, for a few years now, the introduction of chocolate in the form of eggs or figures has made these sweets the predominant ones on the market. Even many Easter dolls are made entirely of chocolate in different shapes and flavors, and some add other elements such as designs printed on the chocolate structures.
The most sold dolls in Sant Feliu
We went out to the streets to ask which monkeys are having the most success in different establishments in the city. At the Joan de Mas Lluí patisserie, they explain that the traditional monas are the most sold and assure that, compared to March last year, prices have dropped a little. In addition, they point out that, this year, the all-chocolate dolls in Pokemon cartoons are having success. In the same vein, at the Can Plana patisserie these figures also stand out, although they claim that the most sold is the traditional one, in a spherical shape made with butter and accompanied by chocolate eggs. However, the 52 Moments cafe located on Carrer Vidal i Ribas is the best-seller, although they point out that the traditional monas in a smaller format are sold more. On the other hand, in La Despensa de Eva the most successful dolls are those that incorporate characters from the manga and anime series Dragon Ball such as Son Goku. The establishment assures that this year’s revelation has been the Bluey dog’s Easter mittens. In addition, the pastry workers point to an increase in sales compared to the previous year. At the Mas Tres patisserie, they confirm the Bluey phenomenon and also highlight among the best sellers, the dolls of the Pokémon character, Pikachu. Beyond the cartoons, some trends do not change and among the most demanded are those of Barça. There are different types and flavours, but the best sellers at Mas Lluí’s Chocolat-Box confectionary are the monkey with the Barça team crest and the figure of the boot with three chocolates and the monkey with the soccer ball , both made only with chocolate.
The preferences of Sant Feliuencs
Which coins will the men and women of Sant Feliuen buy? Half of the interviewees admit that a few years ago they bought the traditional mona and, for some time, they have been buying the chocolate mona: made only with chocolate without brioche. Among the citizens interviewed, they admit to buying this type of Easter candy for novelty or to let themselves be guided by the choice of their godchildren. However, an important part of the respondents says that they tend to buy the butter monkey with chocolate eggs. Even so, some Sant Feliuens make their own monas from a homemade gingerbread: this way we can make it to our liking and it’s cheaper, points out a Sant Feliuen from the Center district. Finally, a smaller group reports buying only chocolate figures such as large eggs, chickens or chicks to share.
