Discovering the Water Mines of Sant Feliu

by PREMIUM.CAT

The exceptional drought situation

In recent months, Sant Feliu has experienced an exceptional situation of drought which has led to the application of restrictions on the use of water. This shortage has generated changes in the landscape and in the daily activities of the municipality. The lakes of Palau Falguera and Parc Nadal have been empty, and the vegetation has suffered the consequences of the lack of rain. This situation has made us aware of the importance of water and its relationship with the territory.

The water mines of Sant Feliu

In this context, a group of Sant Feliu residents formed by Jaume Campos, Josep Menargues and Oriol Valls has dedicated the last three years to the study and exploration of Sant Feliu’s water mines. This underground hydraulic heritage, which had fallen into oblivion, has become relevant in times of drought like the current one. Water mines are pipelines built to capture water from underground in the mountains and distribute it to the places where it is needed. A total of 14 mines have been detected and inventoried in Sant Feliu, but it is believed that there may be more.

A team passionate about discovery

The team formed by Jaume, Josep and Oriol share a passion for the mountains and the natural environment. In addition, each contributes their knowledge and skills in areas such as agriculture, landscape architecture and environmental science. Since the beginning of their work, they have explored water mines, taken measurements, carried out topographical work and documented their findings. They have also organized talks and guided tours to make this heritage known to the public.

The importance of water mines

The water mines of Sant Feliu have a significant historical and heritage value. In addition, in a context of climate change and drought, the possibility of reusing these mines as a source of water opens up. Examples such as the Bon Salvador school or the Can Rigal and Can Mercader parks demonstrate that it is possible to take advantage of mine water for uses such as watering gardens or filling lakes. The recovery and preservation of this heritage is an important task for the conservation of the territory and the collective memory.

A promising future

The study of the Sant Feliu water mines generates reflection and debate on the importance of water and its sustainable use. In addition, it raises the possibility of finding solutions to face climate emergencies. Although much remains to be explored and researched, the mine team is working enthusiastically to publicize this heritage and claim its value. With the support of citizens and institutions, the water mines of Sant Feliu can have a promising future as a sustainable water resource.
