A year of changes in job safety
One year ago, the tragedy of the cook Núria in the Mas d’Enric prison marked a before and after in the safety of prison workers. This incident, caused by an inmate, triggered a wave waves that resonated in the labor and social fields, highlighting the system’s vulnerabilities.
Mobilizations and demands
The outrage generated by the murder led to mass mobilizations and a break in the relationships between prison officials and the Department of Justice. Despite the signing of a labor agreement that included security measures, the demand for complete implementation of these measures persists between the unions.
Labor Agreements and Safety
UGT workers have confirmed that the signed agreements have been fulfilled, but claim the application of all agreed measures. In contrast, other unions such as CSIF and Blue Tide continue to demand more actions to ensure safety.
Department of Justice Commitment
In a commemorative act in Mas d’Enric prison, the Department of Justice has reaffirmed its dedication to labor security, while promising to guarantee the rights of inmates. The entities that have been in contact with the ACN recognize a positive change in the attitude of the Ministry, although they ask for a more determined action.
Improvements in the template
One of the most prominent measures is the creation of approximately 800 new jobs that will contribute to a greater presence of officials in various fields, thus increasing security. Montse Balaguer de UGT emphasized that this extension is crucial to generating confidence among the workers.
Security Protocols Review
The previous Directorate of Justice promised to review the security protocols in risk areas, but the new counselor, Ramon Espadaler, has gone further, banning inmates with violent crimes from working in dangerous places. This decision has been welcomed by workers, although it has generated criticism from some organizations.
Additional security measures
Measures such as the restriction on the use of dangerous instruments in kitchens and workshops, as well as the relocation of 359 inmates, have been introduced. In addition, the implementation of emergency button and measures against drones that can introduce illegal substances into the facilities has been proposed.
Challenges for the future
Despite advances, workers continue to demand improvements. The proposal to introduce sprays to deter violence between inmates has been rejected, although some unions believe that it would be a useful tool. The discussion of medication dispensing and trafficking within prisons is also open.
Future vision
Workers in the sector express the need for greater recognition as agents of authority and ask for improvements to be effective immediately. Alberto Gómez de Csif emphasized that only a political will to implement these measures is needed, some of which could be unpopular but effective.
The voice of the workers
Finally, the perspective of Francesc de Marea Blue reflects a certain trigger for the agreement reached, with the belief that there is still a long way to guarantee the labor rights and safety of prison workers.
