Preparations for an unforgettable celebration
With the arrival of August, the town of Cocentaina is transformed, welcoming the Moors and Christians festivities dedicated to Sant Hipòlit. For weeks, the inhabitants have been preparing intensively, with several previous events that have included the Publication and the presentation of charges.
Activities that mark the way to the festivities
Until the start of the celebrations, scheduled for August 9-12, revelers will enjoy a series of events that aim to warm the spirits. The activities include religious acts in memory of the deceased from the filaes, as well as concerts by the Colla de Dolçaines and Tabals Mal Passet, the Societat Ateneu Musical de Cocentaina and the Unió Musical Contestana.
Tradition and religiosity
A highlight will be on August 8, with the transfer of the image of Saint Hippolytus from the Church of the Savior to the Monastery of the Virgin Mary, immediately after mass.
The big start: the eve of the festivities
On August 9, the starting shot will be given with an emotional parade of bands along the Passeig del Comtat, culminating with the Hymne de Festes al Pla, a moment that marks the official start of the celebrations.
A day full of emotions
On Saturday August 10, Diana will wake up the revelers in one of the most exciting acts. In addition, at 12:30 p.m., the embassy will take place between the Contrabando and Maseros rows, one of the most anticipated moments of the program. The day will culminate with the Entrance of Moors and Christians, which promises to attract crowds, starting with the Christian side at 7pm.
Homage to the patron and unique traditions
Sunday, August 11, will be dedicated to paying homage to Saint Hippolytus, with the participation of the little ones in the Second Diana. This day will include events in honor of the patron saint and the unique presentation of weapons to the festive officials, followed by an evening procession.
The grand finale: a day of powder and fun
Finally, on Monday August 12, Cocentaina will experience a day of festive battle, with gunpowder as the protagonist. One of the most peculiar events will be the Tomato Embassy, where the Bequeters and Ministerial Cavalry ranks will fight with tomatoes. The day will conclude with the reconquest of the locality by the Christians and a mass of thanksgiving at the monastery of the Virgin Mary, as well as the return of the image of Saint Hippolytus to the Church of the Savior.
