The rector defends the legality of the chair

Joaquín Goyache, the head of the Complutense University of Madrid, has denied any irregularity in the establishment of the chair that he shares with Begoña Gómez, wife of the President of the Government. During his appearance before judge Juan Carlos Peinado, Goyache emphasized that he only forwarded the proposal to the vice-chancellor Juan Carlos Doadrio, who managed the process without his direct intervention.

This statement comes in the context of investigations into alleged crimes of corruption and influence peddling. Goyache, who had previously testified as a witness, has distanced himself from the case and denied any involvement in influence peddling, focusing on his administrative role.

Suspension of key statements in the case

On the same day, Judge Peinado made the decision to postpone the statement of Juan Carlos Barrabés, a businessman who has become a suspect after admitting to meetings in Moncloa with Begoña Gómez, in the presence of Pedro Sánchez. Originally, the meeting was scheduled for this Monday.

Witnesses called to testify

In addition to Goyache and Barrabés, several witnesses were scheduled to be questioned, including Luis Miguel Ciprés, CEO of Barrabés, and Félix Jordán de Urries, director of the Fundación Deporte Joven. However, the judge suspended Ciprés’ appearance at a critical moment for the development of the case.

Sanchez’s statement in the eye of the storm

Pedro Sánchez is at the centre of controversy, as his statement will take place at the presidential residence. This has generated widespread interest, especially since Vox, one of the main opposition parties, has been appointed as the accuser in the case against Begoña Gómez.

Reactions to the making of the statement

The Prime Minister has filed appeals to prevent his appearance as a witness, arguing that his presence should not be interpreted as that of a relative of the accused, but rather in his role as head of the executive. However, the judge rejected these requests, insisting that he will appear before him.

Future implications of the case

The situation is still developing, and the judge’s decision on the appeals filed by the prosecution and Gómez’s defence could influence the progress of the investigation. The political turmoil generated by this affair not only affects those directly involved, but also resonates in the general climate of political debate in Spain.
