Presentation of the buses
Yesterday, in Barcelona, the presentation of three new capacity buses, which will be assigned to the City Fire Brigade, was presented. The event was attended by the Deputy Mayor for Security, Prevention and Coexistence, Albert Batlle, and the President of the Port of Barcelona, José Alberto Carbonell.
Investment and functionality
The purchase of these vehicles, with a total cost of 1,647,900 euros without VAT, responds to the need to increase the capacity of intervention in emergency situations. The buses will be destined to deal with large urban and industrial fires, as well as to manage incidents with dangerous goods, thus guaranteeing a quick response to chemical accidents.
Substitution and improvement of the service
This new equipment will replace fire vehicles that were already an average age of 15 years, with the aim of improving coverage in the port area and in the city in general. The Montjuïc and Zona Franca fire parks will be responsible for these new acquisitions.
Collaboration History
The transfer of the buses is part of a collaboration agreement that began in 1995 between the Port of Barcelona and the Civil Protection Service of the City Council. Throughout these 30 years, this relationship has been essential to ensuring an effective response to incidents in the port area.
Impact of the agreement
The signed agreements have allowed to guarantee a quick response in the event of accidents, with the aim of restoring the activity of the port in the shortest possible time. The current agreement, signed in 2022, has an initial duration of four years with the possibility of extension, and includes a planned investment of 2.4 million euros for equipment and training.
Training and drill
The agreement also contemplates a budget of 500,000 euros for specific training of firefighters, focusing on the fighting fire on ships. This training will include theoretical and practical aspects to adapt to the particular characteristics of the port.
Activities of the previous year
Last year, the Barcelona Fire Brigade performed a total of 869 operations in the port area, most of them related to security during the loading and unloading operations of dangerous materials. In addition, 25 drills were performed to improve the preparation and response to emergencies.
Looking to the future
With this new acquisition and the continuity of the agreement, it is expected that the collaboration between the port and the Barcelona Fire Brigade remains strong, thus ensuring an effective response to future incidents and strengthening security in the city and its port infrastructure.
