A trip that triggers political tensions
Recently, the issue of immigration has become a hot topic in the Spanish political arena, especially after the visit of President Pedro Sánchez to several African countries such as Mauritania, Gambia and Senegal. This trip has intensified the criticism of the Popular Party (PP), which accuses the executive of generating a ‘call effect’ for irregular immigration.
Government responses to allegations
The government’s reaction was not long in coming. José Manuel Albares, Minister of Foreign Affairs, has defended the government’s initiatives, regretting that the PP is approaching the xenophobic ideas of the extreme right. Albares has highlighted the need for a humanitarian and responsible response to immigration, citing legislative reforms that could facilitate aid to immigrant minors.
The reform of Article 35 of the Foreign Affairs Law
The Spanish government, in collaboration with the Canarian authorities, has proposed a modification of article 35 of the Aliens Act, which seeks to offer effective solutions for immigration, but which has met with resistance from the PP and others political groups
The PP vision: a different approach
Alberto Núñez Feijóo, leader of the PP, has expressed his concern about the current situation of immigration in Spain, considering that the government’s actions could aggravate the migration crisis. Feijóo has stated that instead of fighting the mafias that operate in Africa, Sánchez is promoting Spain as an attractive destination for immigrants.
PP proposals for stricter control
The PP has presented a plan that includes measures to strengthen security at the borders, with the aim of better managing migratory flows. This initiative involves an increase in the presence of security agents and collaboration with Frontex, the European agency dedicated to border surveillance.
Calls for responsibility and dialogue
In response to the situation, Pilar Alegría, spokeswoman for the Spanish government, has urged the PP to show a more constructive stance and to avoid speeches that encourage division. Alegría stressed that the government is looking for viable solutions and that it is essential that political forces work together to face the challenges presented by immigration.
The road to a joint solution
As the immigration debate continues, it becomes clear that collaboration between different political actors is essential to find effective solutions. The need to manage immigration responsibly and humanely is a challenge that requires shared commitment and open dialogue.
