A worrying balance at the end of 2024
The Zoo del Pirineu, located in Odèn, has closed 2024 with a record number of rescues, but also with a worrying saturation of resources. This private center, which is the largest in Catalonia in rescuing wild animals, is facing a critical situation that could affect its ability to continue saving lives.
Stories of resilience: the case of Gloria
A year ago, a golden eagle named Gloria was rescued in an alarming condition after being electrocuted. Thanks to the efforts of the Zoo team, Gloria has regained her health and is now enjoying a dignified life. However, more and more animals in similar situations are arriving at the center, increasing the pressure on its already limited facilities.
2024: a year of successes but also of challenges
Over the course of the year, the Zoo has rescued 430 animals from 25 different species, with a remarkable 55% of them returning to their natural habitat. However, the increasing number of animals requiring long-term care is a worrying sign. Currently, the zoo is home to 239 animals from 61 species, consolidating itself as the zoo with the greatest diversity of Iberian fauna in Spain.
A space for knowledge and awareness
With an influx of 16,800 visitors each year, the Pyrenees Zoo not only acts as a refuge, but is also an important educational center. Visitors learn about the stories of rescued animals and the impact of human activities on nature, fostering a vital environmental awareness.
A call to action: the future of the Zoo depends on everyone
The Zoo del Pirineu is at a crossroads. With a constant increase in the number of rescued animals, the lack of resources threatens the continuity of its mission. The Zoo del Pirineu Foundation makes an urgent appeal to companies and citizens who share its concern for animal welfare and nature conservation, to join its cause. Its mission is to ensure that every rescued animal has the care it needs by 2025.
