The Balearic Balcòning Federation presents the Balcòning Historical Ranking

The study carried out by the Balconing Federation, responsible for analyzing the cases of this daring practice that some tourists adopt in Spain, has revealed the historical ranking of balcony cases at the beginning of the 2024 season. This information is make it known with the hashtag #BalcònLliga2024.

For those unfamiliar with the term ‘balconing’, it’s a trend where tourists, and occasionally locals, jump from tourist hotel balconies in hopes of defying the laws of gravity. As expected, this bold act often results in tragedies, with several cases of death and injury.

Analyzing the Geographical Origins of the Balcony

The study details the cases of balconization according to the origin of the tourists. Researchers assign a final score to each country based on the sum of deaths and injuries from this cause, providing a unique perspective on the dangerousness of this practice.

The United Kingdom tops the ranking with 173 points, tripling the score of the second ranked. The British have registered 34 dead and 105 injured, with a total of 139 cases. In addition, they have experienced the fall of 439 stories, with an average jump of 3.2 stories. 24% of cases have been fatal, the last in 2023.

In second place is Germany with 51 points, standing out for its fatally spectacular number of cases. With 12 dead and 27 injured, the Germans have added a total of 39 cases. Jumping from a height slightly higher than the British, with an average of 3.3 floors, they have recorded 31% of fatal cases.

Spain is in third place with 26 points, showing that the balcony has transcended our borders. With 3 dead and 20 injured, 23 cases have been registered. The Spaniards have jumped from 48 floors, with an average of 2.1. 13% of cases have had a fatal outcome.

Other Featured Countries

Italy and France complete the balcony TOP5 with scores of 18 and 15, respectively.
